New Textbook on European Surgical Orthopaedics and Traumatology launched at the EFORT Congress in London

A new comprehensive Textbook on European Orthopaedics and Traumatology was launched at the 15th EFORT Congress in London. This major educational project of the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EFORT) reflects the state of the art and the best current practice in this specialty field across Europe.

15th EFORT Congress, London, UK, 4 June 2014 – More than 7,000 participants at the 15th EFORT Congress that takes place in London from 4 to 6 June 2014 were introduced to the new EFORT Textbook entitled “European Surgical Orthopaedics and Traumatology.” The 7 volume reference publication was edited by Prof George Bentley (London), and covers an extensive range of musculoskeletal conditions and injuries and their comprehensive management.

“The launch of the EFORT Textbook is one of the Congress highlights”, EFORT President Prof Manuel Cassiano Neves (Lisbon) stressed. “With the EU directives on professional and patient mobility, we are developing towards a single healthcare market. That calls for harmonisation of medical education. The new textbook represents an important landmark in terms of building up such harmonisation in the field of European orthopaedics and traumatology.”

“The overall concept of this publication was to create an up-to-date, comprehensive encyclopaedia of basic knowledge and current research in the field of orthopaedic and trauma surgery,” Prof Bentley explained.

The book is arranged in 10 sections, including general topics such as the management of infections in orthopaedics, organisation and advances in trauma surgery, musculoskeletal imaging, and the major conditions involving all regions of the musculoskeletal system as well as special topics such as musculoskeletal tumours and paediatric orthopaedics.

Filling a gap

The EFORT Textbook differs considerably from the literature thus far available in the field of orthopaedic and trauma surgery. The breadth of information collected in the new publication truly fills a gap, Prof Bentley pointed out. “There are very good textbooks available on particular surgical techniques or special areas, but our new book attempts to provide an almost complete coverage, in terms of encompassing the totality of diseases, disorders and injuries  as well as a comprehensive approach to patient management.”

The publication, available in print and electronic format, additionally has a European focus “and in this sense is pretty well unique,” its editor pointed out. “There is a lot of exceptional work in Europe.  Many innovations in the field of orthopaedic and trauma surgery over the last decades have come from Europe. We want to make this important material and knowledge available and publicise the variety and quality of clinical practice, research and literature available in Europe which was so far not fully appreciated by much of the English-speaking world.”

Valuable information for trainees and practitioners

The book will be a valuable reference and information source for trainees in the preparation for their examinations and assessments, Prof Bentley said. This is also true for those taking the Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EBOT) examinations. “But the target group goes far beyond trainees, providing education and guidance also to all others involved in the practice of our specialty and related fields.”
