Warmest wishes for a happy holiday season
Prof. Dr. Theofilos Karachalios, EFORT President 2024/2025
Prof. Dr. Rob Nelissen, EFORT Second Vice President & Acting Secretary General
As we approach the end of the year, we are reminded that 2024 has been a year of both challenges and transformation for EFORT.
In response to a rapidly changing environment, EFORT has recently undergone significant structural and operational changes. Agility has been key to our response, and we remain committed to adapting to meet the needs of our professional community.
After careful consideration, the EFORT Board has opted to streamline our activities to better align with our core mission. This adjustment impacts how we organise educational programmes and future congresses.
It is important to acknowledge that this reorganisation, while necessary, has also meant saying goodbye to valued colleagues who were part of a very talented team. We remain grateful for their hard work and dedication.
Moving forward, EFORT will operate as a leaner organisation, concentrating on:
The EBOT exam, for which EFORT continues to serve as the only European scientific society offering both written and oral parts, upholding the highest training standards.
Our highly regarded webinar series and other educational initiatives, which continue to provide accessible,
high-quality education for all.
As we look ahead, we offer our warmest wishes for a happy holiday season.
May this time bring you peace and reflection as we prepare to embrace new opportunities in the coming year.

How has EFORT contributed to the implementation of the
Medical Device Regulation through CORE-MD?
The indroduction and implementation of the Medical Device Regulation (MDR) has led to the publication of numerous guidance documents by the Medical Device Coordination Group, an expert group from the European Commission composed of representatives of national competent authorities and various stakeholders.
Between April 2021 and March 2024, EFORT has been involved as co-leader in an EU-funded project called CORE-MD.
CORE-MD reviewed methodologies for the clinical evaluation of high-risk medical devices, and recommended new designs to set an appropriate balance between innovation, safety, and clinical effectiveness.
It brought together medical associations, EU regulators, national public health institutes, notified bodies, academic institutions, patient groups, and health technology assessment agencies, in collaboration with manufacturers’ trade associations.
This project produced many documents which have made a significant contribution to the implementation of the MDR.
